Art and design is imbedded in all areas of our curriculum at Whiteheath infant school. When the children start our school in the early years we aim to inspire and develop a love for the arts. Throughout the school year, all children have an opportunity to create individual pieces of art work, which are celebrated by displaying their work for all eyes to see. The children also have the opportunities to share their art work with their parents at our class assemblies and expedition evenings.
The Art curriculum shows a clear progression of skills and techniques. In the Early years, the children are focusing on learning key fine and gross motor skills as well as growing independence and experimenting with different art and design aspects. In year 1 the children dive deeper into Art and they learn about key artist such as, Van Gogh and Barbara Hepworth, additionally the children focus on observational drawings and paintings. In year 2 the children explore more key artists such as David Hardy and Kandinsky and they learn new skills such as scraffito.
Similarly, in our Design Technology curriculum, the children have the opportunity to express their individuality. The children are encouraged to create unique pieces of work. In reception the children get to design and make their own Diva Clay lamps as well as their own superhero capes. In year 1 the children learn about healthy eating and The Pantry teach the children how to make a healthy smoothie. In year 2 the children create their own London landmark and are taught skills such as sewing.
Art and Design unites all the children together at Whiteheath infant school. Ever year the children take part in Art Week. This year the school has taken part in a Project called ‘Take one Picture’. This project has been a success, all the children have enjoyed being creative and this is shown through their work. Please look at some of the art work from this year’s art week.
